Container Terminals

Upon completion of our NIT North optimization project, Port of Virginia container terminals will leverage a total of 152 semi-automated rail-mounted gantry cranes and standardized technology and operations. This investment will deliver the most advanced port complex in North America, with an impressive 5.1 million TEU capacity.

Unique to our terminals, customers can track their cargo’s journey through a single gateway operating system, which provides a uniform technology platform across the entire port.

Our container terminals provide on-dock access to Class I double-stack rail service with Norfolk Southern and CSX, delivering second-day service to the Midwest and Ohio Valley markets, as well as direct access to the interstate highway system.

Chassis

The Port of Virginia owns and operates Hampton Roads Chassis Pool (HRCP II) which ensures you have reliable access to quality chassis. Our  delivery of 6,500 chassis assets will reduce the average age of the fleet to an industry-best 3.5 years. And, we have specialized equipment including triaxles and under-mount genset chassis, to support shippers moving heavy and refrigerated/frozen cargoes.

Ocean Carriers

Our geographic proximity to consumer markets, deep-water harbor and semi-automation provides a level of productivity that is attractive to ocean carriers, making The Port of Virginia a crucial node in their network designs. As a result, we offer global supply chain services covering all critical import and export lanes and service options via every major ocean carrier.

Our channel deepening and widening initiative will allow for two-way traffic of ultra large cargo vessels (ULCVs), resulting in increased vessel utilization and berth efficiency. Our PRO-PASS tracking system, dedicated ocean carrier team and chassis pool assets provide for seamless cargo movement between vessel and destination.

Rail

In partnership with Norfolk Southern and CSX, we offer on-dock rail service to/from 11 key markets along the East Coast and the Midwest. We offer 47-hour double-stack service to Chicago and 36-hour double-stack service to Columbus, OH. Providing customers multiple options to flex with their supply chain is one of the ways our experts can add value and help you extend your reach into the markets you need.

Technology

The Virginia Model allows The Port of Virginia to operate more like a logistics gateway than a traditional port in every capability we offer, including technology.

We own all of the systems and platforms that we use to operate the port, as well as the platforms we offer to share data for both supply chain management and day-to-day operations.

For supply chain management, we offer a Web API platform that customers can use to integrate data and events into supply chain visibility and Transportation Management Systems (TMS). We also offer traditional EDI services for events and data, and a variety of transport mechanisms to support the most common ways of sharing data.

For daily operations, we offer our PRO-PASS(r) Reservation System. This provides a single platform for truckers to use for pick-up and drop-off reservations, regardless of which marine or inland terminal they are servicing thus reducing trucker turn-time, trouble cases and port congestion.

Warehousing

The Port of Virginia has attracted a network of warehousing capabilities to meet the needs of every supply chain. Our team can match you with the right capacity and capabilities to meet your needs, including transload, fulfillment, distribution, E-Commerce, bonded, liquid, organic, food products, haz mat, household goods, refrigerated cargos and foreign-trade zones.

Reefer

We continually invest ahead of the needs of reefer customers. Investments in each of our three marine terminals ensure that there is space and plugs irrespective of which terminal(s) service your cargo.

In addition to our own cold-chain solutions, we work with US agencies to develop import and export cold treatment programs to streamline supply chains of reefer cargos to help our customers optimize transportation costs, lengthen shelf-lives of perishables and allow goods to get to market faster.

Barge

The Virginia Model allows us to think beyond the port and to work on behalf of our customers and your supply chain needs, including extending the reach of the port to ever-expanding inland markets. Our barge service provides another means of moving cargo to and from the Mid-Atlantic region. With reefer capability and no restrictions on weight or OOG cargo and the ability to handle hazardous cargo as well – barge service is a great fit for a variety of cargo.

Our load/discharge ports for barge service include

  • The Port of Virginia marine terminals (including Richmond, VA)
  • Seagirt Marine Terminal, Baltimore, MD
  • Packer Avenue Marine Terminal, Philadelphia, PA

Barge service is efficient and more environmentally friendly than moving by truck, and thus also supports our commitment to sustainability.
